Eating Animals

02 May 2013

Two weeks ago I bought Eating Animals, Jonathan Safran Foer's book on his years oscillating between omnivore and vegetarian and who’s casual questioning took an urgency on the brink of fatherhood. The research for his book required him to visit "factory farms" in the US and probe some of his most primal instincts about right and wrong.

Last night, I started to read and - way up in the night - I finished the book. Understanding the journey of Jonathan's diet (from veggie to meat and back), shocked by the literal description of the way factory farms make animals into food, but most of all disappointed in the global scale of mistreatment (of animals and nature) by people who make us believe we have our food grown at farms (which we all remember from our youth) surrounded by green and nature.

But here we are. What can we do?
Stop eating meat and think bad about those who don't? Or learn to cook vegan and enjoy veggie/vegan dinners with friends?
Stop wearing leather? Or on top of that, find cool brands who sell vegan shoes and talk about them?
Keep silent because no one wants to be the one nagging all the time. Or try to show people treating animals a less distressed way doens’t mean less fun for us.

People like Bruno Pieters who launched "Honest By" lately did not only make it work in his own life but chose to inspire others. To think, reconsider or change the way they look at fashion. Graanmarkt 13 does not only use "vegetarian on request" on their menu being trendy, they created a equivalent menu for those who choose not to eat meat or fish. Lana works as a volunteer in a NYC animal shelter, and blogs about it. Bert talked in his PechaKucha (Ghent) lately about our way of thinking about cattle ("a horse is a noble animal").

And with them many others inspire us to rethink our behavior of eating and drinking, fashion and clothing,… It is a great feeling to find people who try their best to work their way around animal use and abuse.

"Eating Animals"  is the start of my own quest on the look out for people who inspire me. Start!
